My name has been on the reserves list at the library for this book for an age, and I have been really looking forward to it, so I was very very excited to hear that it was waiting for me last week. 


I must admit that my first reaction to the book was suprise. I had imagined curling up on the couch with a  travel story,  but the book was an enormous hardcover, which instead of being written in chapters was simply little half-page descriptions on different aspects of life in Paris. 


However, the fabulous photos drew me in, and before long I was truly engrossed in the anecdotes, observations and insights of an Australian family who relocate to Paris for a few years. 


I have had my notebook on hand, as this book is a rich resource for anyone planning a visit to Paris, and especially those who plan to stay for some time.


It's got me to dreaming...

    Hi! I just found your blog via another blog that I enjoy. I'm looking forward to looking at more of your posts! I'm bummed, though, because I want to read this book and I can't find it on Amazon.com - for the first time, Amazon has let me down! I'll have to keep on looking elsewhere. It looks/sounds like such a good book to read about a city I love!

Storytime by pictures

There are some children's book illustrators who have made magic.  Tasha Tudor is one of them. She illustrated nearly 100 books in her lifetime (1915-2008). Hunt her out if you haven't found her already. My favourite (so far - I haven't happened across them all yet!) is her book 'A Time to Keep', a book of festivals and holidays, with the most delicious illustrations of family rituals and good times. I so want to own this book! I also want to track down the edition of 'The Night before Christmas' by Clement C Moore that she illustrated. I have seen some of the pages from it and it looks beautiful.

The young readers' dilemma

Sometimes it really hits me just how many and varied are the responsibilities of parenting. There's stuff like the values we model, and then there's other stuff like making sure they get to all their teeth when they brush. It's a big gig. It's a gig that gives me infinite joy, ( oh, and sleepless nights occasionally too ) but I don't take the responsibility lightly. I'm conscientious, that's just how I'm wired. And I'm also a librarian.  So, imagine this: I go to my daughter's parent/teacher interview, and am told that my child is doing just fine (good), but....there's one thing....(uh oh) she could do with extending her reading . As I walk past the empty playground after the meeting I erupt; "bwah hahahaha". Because the irony certainly isn't lost on me.  But, I'm so glad for that parent/teacher meeting.  It got me to thinking. Both my older children have been hooked on reading book series - ch...
